Helping young people build healthy relationships: The DAY Programme
Understanding relationships and recognising unhealthy behaviours is an important part of growing up. The DAY Programme, delivered in Bexley by Solace Women’s Aid, helps young people learn about healthy relationships, respect and safety in an engaging and relatable way. By using short films, advertisements and chart music, DAY makes these essential topics accessible and easy to connect with.
What makes DAY stand out?
Rather than traditional lessons, DAY uses popular culture and media to spark meaningful discussions. It is designed for those aged 14 and older, although it can be adapted for use with young people over 11 years of age, helping them explore how beliefs shape behaviour and how the media influences attitudes toward relationships. DAY encourages young people to think critically and make informed choices about their own relationships.
The aims of DAY
- To give young people knowledge and understanding about domestic abuse, its cause, who it happens to and its effects.
- To enable young people to recognise abusive tactics and behaviours so they can protect themselves from potentially abusive people.
- To enable young people to recognise behaviours and therefore form healthy, non-abusive, relationships.
- To equip young people to know where to seek help and support for issues regarding domestic abuse and/or exploitation
How to get involved
To ensure the programme is delivered effectively, practitioners can train to become Session Leaders. This ensures they have the skills to guide conversations and create a safe space for learning.
